I had the extreme displeasure of watching tonights game after finding out the score. Unfortunately as I arrived to my own game tonight the last 20 seconds of the game was on the TV and I had really no way of avoiding it making my way to the locker room to change. So I knew we got shutout which put me in a very negative mood. By the time I got home I had the entire game already mapped out in my head. I was expecting a lazy effort from the guy. I was expecting some soft goals by Vally, I was expecting turnovers all over the ice, chances against, no quality chances, mistake after mistake…etc.

I guess coming into this game with such a negative expectation gave me something to look for. I was actively searching for something to get all pissed off about. Something to justify my bad mood. Instead, all I got was a really well played game by the Rangers, but an even better played game by the Hurricanes.

I was very happy with our offensive attack, our defensive awareness, our goaltending, our PK, our PP, our puck support, out effort level. Really I have only a few nitpicky things I was annoyed about (more on that in a bit). All I could think about while the game was winding down was…man, we played a solid game, what the hell am I going to write about?!

The fact of the matter is, there is really only one thing you can write about. Sometimes, ya just get beat. I know everyone loves to blame someone, anyone for a loss. People bust out the pitchforks for Lundqvist when he gives up a softie, or they fall in line behind me to crucify Renney for a trillion different line combinations (which Torts was guilty of a bit tonight). But the fact of the matter is, even if you play your absolute best, your peak tip top game, for 82 games..you won’t go 82-0. Why? Because there is another team out there. And every once in a while they out play you. Sure, there are games where an individual on the other team displays a herculean effort, or a goalie absolutely stands on his head, but neither were the case tonight. Tonight, the Canes just played a superb game from start to finish. Their goaltending was astounding, their defense was superb, their attack game was flawless, this PK was better than ours. Really, they just played a great game. So I tip my hat to them, and move on.

I did have issue with a few smallish things tonight. One was the penalty parade we had. It wasn’t extreme, like 12 penalties or anything, but they did seem to come at exactly the wrong time. It seemed like anytime we started to snowball with momentum, we took a penalty (and they were legit calls, no harping on the refs tonight). Those kinds of plays can lead to what happened tonight, where the Rangers seemed to sputter at times because of having to regroup after killing a penalty. I also had an issue with the Rangers goal being overturned. While it was absolutely 100% the right call, it seemed like they were influenced by the Canes being irate than because that is how they saw it. Also I’d love for someone to clarify the hand pass rule, because if I’m not mistaken, when the puck touched Cam Ward on it’s way through to Zherdev, shouldn’t they hand pass have been waived off then? The puck did touch Ward during the scramble after Dubinsky hand passed it, so doesn’t that make it a good goal? Finally, I was a little annoyed at the line juggling that Torts did. No, I’m not getting on the coach, because I have nothing but the utmost respect for his feel and grasp for the game, but it did seem like he decided to swap things up for no good reason. I felt the lines that he had established the past few games have been picture perfect. Why screw with that?

Regardless, tomorrow is another day. Forget about this one, because there is really nothing we could have done. Great job Canes, now let’s move on.

Hectic

It’s been an insane day for me….i feel like just putting my head down on my desk and falling asleep. So no post game wrap even though I did watch the Rangers beat the best team in the East…and managed to score 4 goals against the best defense in the NHL. Not too shabby.

Left a good job in the city
Workin’ for the man every night and day
And I never lost a minute of sleepin’
Worryin’ ’bout the way things might’ve been

Big wheel keep on turnin’
Proud Mary keep on burnin’

Rollin’
Rollin’
Rollin’ on the river

Rollin’
Rollin’
Rollin’ on the river

River,
Doo doo doo
Doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo

Uh huh

Cleaned alot of plates in Memphis
Pulled alot of tanks in the New Orleans
But I never saw the good side of the city
Till I hitch a ride on the River Boat Queen

Big wheel keep on turnin’
Proud Mary keep on burnin’

Rollin’
Rollin’
Rollin’ on the river

Rollin’
Rollin’
Rollin’ on the river

River
Doo doo doo
Doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo

Whoa

If you come down to the river
Bet ya gonna find some people who live
But you dont have to worry
If you have no money
People on the river are happy to give

Big wheel keep on turnin’
Proud Mary keep on burnin’

Rollin’
Rollin’
Rollin’ on the river

I said
Rollin’

Rollin’ on the river

I said

Alright

Yeah

Whoo

The Rangers were not good tonight. Let’s just get that out of the way. Games like this, where the team is flat…they happen, especially with long layoffs, 3 new players getting huge minutes, a new system to absorb, yadda yadda yadda. But you know what? They won. And you know what else? They didn’t win just because Henrik was outstanding…he certainly was. They won because they were also able to put the friggin puck in the net. Not once, not twice…but four separate times. For those of you keeping track at home, that’s 10 goals in 2 games for this club that, according to some, did not have the offensive talent to score goals.

Yeah…that’s me rolling my eyes.

The New York Rangers have the talent to score goals, they always have. They now play a system though that protects them from having to be too individualized. They are a team of scorers, not a team with a scorer. What I love is that Henrik bailed his team out, which were exceptionally sloppy, but also his team bailed Henrik out when he was unable to be perfect and gave up 2 goals.

The difference between tonights game with Renney behind the bench? We lose 2-0, and Henrik takes a beating on the message board for not keeping it a 0-0 tie. Gotta love perspective.

I love that this team now has a system that can win them games when they suck, and can win them games against the best teams in the league…which is something we will see very soon.

One last thing, I just wanted to say that the coolest thing in the world is going to happen to me tomorrow. Following the Thrashers-Canadiens game tomorrow, my hockey team is getting to play one of our games at the Philips Arena. It’s an incredible honor, and just incredible to even be able to say. I wanted to thank the Atlanta Thrashers organization for allowing us to do this, it is very gracious of them. I better get to bed, want to be nice and rested before I unleash hell tomorrow! :-D

Can I Just Point Out…

Posted by inferno272 on March 5th, 2009

My source was dead on with this…

Derek Morris- My pick for the most likely deal to go down for the Rangers at the deadline. The only thing I am hearing which could prevent such a deal is if other premier defenseman such as Bouwmeester, Pronger, Kaberle are not dealt which would make the price to high for the Rangers. A well placed source says Barnett is pushing for the acquisition of Morris. Names I am hearing are Prucha/Kalinen/Voros/Dawes/high pick.

Here’s How You Look At It…

Posted by inferno272 on March 4th, 2009

So, I’ve had ample time to really think about todays happenings and here is the thought I have. No team in the NHL has improved as much as the Rangers have in the past 2 weeks. NOBODY.

Yeah, I’m sure you’re rolling your eyes. Whatever Inferno, the kool-aid you are drinking must be awfully strong…

Maybe you are right, but the way I look at it is this. We added one of the 3 best coaches in the game today (in my personal opinion). We added the single best agitator in the game today. We added a legitimate 25-30 goal scorer. We added an adequate defenseman. We got bigger. We got stronger. We got more talented. We got a more aggressive system. And we gained some cap flexibility for next season. All that cost us was some combination of Tom Renney, Reitz, Kalinin, Prucha, Dawes, and a 2nd round draft pick.

Sounds great to me! Honestly, I just went from thinking this club may barely squeak into the playoffs, to thinking this club may actually be able to advance a round or 2 WHEN they make the playoffs. That is pretty damn amazing. Honestly, to me the biggest move in the entire NHL was Tom Renney leaving and Tortorella coming in. I know people look at me as a Renney hater, but to me, let’s just forget about Renney here and look at Torts. He’s an NHL champion, he’s the guy Team USA wants to coach their club, and he’s a man who preaches accountability, and team concept above all else. There is basically not a single aspect about John that isn’t ideal for a head coach in the NHL. The only weakness he may have his is less than diplomatic way of handling things with the press, other than that, he’s basically perfect. Next you take the vanillaist team in the NHL, and add the most non-vanilla player in the entire NHL to it. That is a monstrous upgrade. Avery brings intensity, Avery brings hitting, Avery brings aggressiveness, Avery draws penalties. Avery has speed…in short, Sean Avery is built to play John Tortorella hockey. Next you have Nik Antropov. Big, excellent hands, point-shot tipper extraordinaire. What we have been lacking on the power play, besides a canon for a point shot, is a big man to set up in front, get garbage goals, and get those tip in goals. While Drury tried valiantly, he is still a midget and is probably most effective in Ilya Kovalchuks office (left circles waiting for the 1-time slapper). Antro gives us the guy to get those hard to get goals, and who will get those tip ins. He is also an incredibly talented player who, like Zherdev, has never reached his enormous potential. There is a reason this guy was a top 10 pick. Gigantic players with hands, speed, and skill don’t grow on trees. Finally you have Derek Morris. In short, he’s better than Kalinin. He’s not great, he’s grossly overpaid, and extremely overrated…but he is better than Kalinin, and is an expiring contract, so whatever, I’m ok with it.

Right now, I am fairly happy. I still wish we got rid of one of our large contracts, and took the gamble on Marian Gaborik. Oh well, maybe in the offseason.

Tomorrow should be interesting.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEHAWWWWWWWWW!!!!

Posted by inferno272 on March 3rd, 2009

Today, a gross injustice was righted. Sean Avery…is once again where he belongs…in Rangers blue. I’m so happy I could cry.

Update: Voros is waived as well…it took Torts 1 game to see what Renney couldnt realize in like 50…this guy is not an NHLer. Man, did we win the lottery today or what?!

Trade Chatter

Posted by inferno272 on March 3rd, 2009

Here is what my source is telling me. Again whether you choose to believe this or not is irrelevant. I dont charge for these rumors, I just pass them on…

All major trades revolve around Scott Gomez. If the team is able to swing a big deal he will center it.

The most likely scenario at the deadline will be smaller deals made by the team.

Players unlikely to be acquired but being discussed nevertheless:

Vincent Lecavalier-
Who on earth wouldn’t want this guy on their team. My contacts are telling me that the big hold up on this from being discussed more seriously is Marc Staal. The Lightning are asking for a package including Gomez, Staal, Dawes, Sanguinetti and 09 1st Rounder as well as a 2010 2nd Rounder. Obviously for the Rangers giving up both Staal and Sagunietti is not an option.

Martin St. Louis- Besides the obvious Tortorella connection, Martin St. Louis does have a family connection to New York Area. The Lightning are looking for a package of Prucha, Dawes, Kalinen and a 09 1st Round pick. Being weary of St.Louis age combined with the talent in the upcoming draft as well as the possiblity of a resurgence from Petr Prucha under Tortorella the Rangers are unlikely to take these discussions further.

Keith Tkackhuk- Great power-forward who a week ago was all but going to be traded. With the winning ways of the St. Louis Blues, it is unlikely to see him move. However, at the time there was discussion of Petr Prucha, Dimirti Kalinen and a 1st Round Pick going to the Blues.

Ed Jovanovski-
Sources say the Rangers have had interest in him for the past two seasons and even going back to when he was a free agent. Not much in terms of details of who would be going where but his name has been discussed.

Players likely to be acquired:

Marek Svatos-
As of right now the only hold up on this deal from going through is that the Rangers would like to acquire Marek without dealing Petr Prucha in return. Colorado has initially proposed a deal involving Prucha a mid pick for Svatos.

Marc-Andre Bergeron-
The Rangers are in need of a great powerplay defenseman. This would fit the bill. Sources say that Kalinen and a mid pick could be going the other way.

Radek Bonk-
I have heard from a reliable source that the Rangers are flying under the radar with their interest in him. Not sure who or what would be going the other way.

Open The Floodgates – Avalance@Rangers Post Game Thoughts…

Posted by inferno272 on March 1st, 2009

Prior to tonights game, I went on to all the message boards, and the NYRangersCast site and predicted a Rangers 7-1 victory. Now, while it is cool that I was a Brandon Dubinsky faux goal away from that score, the more interesting thing is why I made the bold prediction. It’s not because I feel the Avalanche are a pathetic team, or that I had a gut feeling, or anything else. The reason is plain and simple. They deserved a win like this.

After trouncing the Maple Leafs…and somehow losing. After demolishing the Panthers….and somehow losing. The New York Rangers were without a doubt deserving of a win tonight. Because you simply can not play as well as these guys have, and continue to lose games. No, strike that. You simply can not play as well as these guys have, and not blow out the opposition. It really all comes back to my theory on hockey. Play the game right, and the results will come, especially over a large sample size.

We play well, we deserve to win. It’s just that we haven’t been getting the deserved results since Torts took over. Now we are, and I think the results are likely to continue.

With that said, I still do not feel this is a club capable of winning a Stanley Cup, and therefore I don’t think we should “go for it” and try to load up at the deadline. It’s just stupid to do so. But I will leave that for my next article.

I am going to leave you with this. KellyKisio11 on the ECSF boards made the following statement:

I don’t get how it’s possible that Renney was telling them not to play like this.

To which I responded (edited for language):

His system is built to be passive till the red line, then try to collectively hold the blueline. its a territorial white flag system. we give away 1/2 the effing ice playing his style of hockey. By attacking more in the neutral zone and in the offensive zone, we dont have to defend so effing much.

We sucked because we dont have the puck. Even the best defensive clubs in the world will wilt against never ending pressure. The real problem is how quickly we vacate the offensive zone in Renneys system. There is just no effing pressure playing his style. As soon as you lose the puck, or you might possibly lose the puck, everyone starts retreating. Its a wussy style of hockey, and thats why it sucks. Only time we were successful is when individuals played outstanding within the confines of his system. ts why we were so dependant on Jagr, the system more or less dictates that you need to have elite individual talents to hold on to the puck and make things happen all on their lonesome.

So in that aspect, you are right, the Rangers lack the talent to play Tom Renney hockey. You literally need a team with Jagr, AO, Crosby, etc to score goals within the confines of that suffocating system. But collectively this team has MORE THAN ENOUGH talent to put the puck in the net when put into a more sensible system for their talent level. They dont have enough elite players, but they dont have many bottom feeding talent either. They are a fairly balanced team with, in my humble opinion, 9 players who could all play on the 2nd line of most of the teams out there. Thats balance.

Were not as bad as we look under Renney…thats all ive been saying since for-effing-ever. Its just that his style is so not suited for us.
