You know, people use the phrase “it’s a game of inches” a lot when describing just about any major sport. In baseball it’s with reference to the strike zone, or a close play at home. In football it’s about getting that last inch to get into the end zone. In hockey most people think “a game of inches” refers to a shot going in the net, or just missing.

To me though, this game wasn’t about a game of inches, it was really about a game of feet. You could literally see the difference in playing styles on every single shift in glaringly clear high definition. The Rangers concede the offensive zone, and their part of the neutral zone. The Bruins fight you for every single inch you want to move up the ice, regardless of what zone you are in.

We back off, they come at you. We retreat, they attack. We surrender, they storm the gates. We have Renney, they have Julien. Go back and read any of my prior rants, and you’ll see one consistent theme. The Rangers need to stop conceding so much of the frigging ice. They need to pressure the puck more. They need to get in the faces of the opposition, they need to use their speed to create turnovers and they need to pounce and counter attack on those turnovers. Instead any time the opposition gets the puck in their own zone, we quickly run away to behind the red line and wait for them to enter and we try to set up a wall for them to go around.

So, which method was more effective tonight? Well, let’s see, 1 team scored a goal by stealing the puck in our zone when we had clear possession of the puck by aggressively forechecking and creating a turnover which ended up in the back of the net. The other team had 35+ perimeter shots with only 1 or 2 quality chances the entire night to speak of and no odd man rushes to my recollection.

One team is at the top of the Eastern Conference and continues to steam roll past the opposition despite having an inferior lineup to at least half of the teams out there, including our own (in my humble opinion anyway), and one team continues to drop like a boulder down the standings despite starting the season something like 10-2-1. We are currently sitting at 4th place, but 2 teams behind us have 3 games in hand and only trail by 1-2 points. We may be sitting in 6th place by the days end, despite roaring out to a gi-normous lead to start the season. Why is this? In my personal opinion, it’s because the Rangers smoke and mirrors routine is starting to wear off. We are beating the teams we should…barely, but the better teams are starting to see our weaknesses, and are exposing them.

One of the true weaknesses we have right now is Wade Redden who continues to be an unmitigated disaster out there. In what might turn out to be the worst signing in Rangers history, Redden continues to flub passes, to be beaten routinely with speed, to have no physical edge whatsoever, to bring nothing to the table in the offensive zone, and to be a slow ineffective puck carrier through the neutral zone who easily is overwhelmed by faster players leading to scoring chances against. If we want to turn this season around, the first step needs to be getting rid of this guy. He will be the reason the Rangers get destroyed in the first round of the playoffs. If I were an opposing coach, I would match up against him, and dump, change, and pressure the guy every single time. He turns the puck over, and is scared to take a hit. No way does this go unnoticed by NHL scouts and NHL head coaches. He’s going to be the end of us. Just wait and see.

Want something else to digest after todays loss? Try this on for size. If the teams behind us all win their games in hand, the Rangers will only be 3 points out of 8th place, and 7 points out of 10th place. That’s 1 bad week and we could be looking up at the playoffs, instead of looking for home ice advantage.

Thanks Sam

As I am sure you have heard by now, Sam Weinman is leaving The Journal News for greener pastures. I just wanted to say I owe Sam a lot. This blog was getting like 5 clicks a week before Sam decided to pimp me out on a few posts, and then link to me permanently. After that my traffic just kept going up, up, up, and pretty much after that I was getting requests for links, rather than being the one who was requesting links. For that I will always be grateful. The Rangers community is losing a great member, and for that, we should all be very unhappy.

Random Thoughts… Rangers@Penguins Post Game Thoughts…

Posted by inferno272 on January 29th, 2009

Just a few quick notes, I dont have time to do a full write up, so I’ll just make these 2 points:

  • For those defending Renney and his system, imho it all comes down to this.

Tom Renneys system dictates that we MUST, not should but MUST play flawless 60 minute hockey where our goaltender stands on his head. There are no ifs, ands or buts. We can not overcome mistakes, we can not bail out a bad night by Henrik (which tonight clearly was). We play for ties. Period. End of story. Even the Pens announcers were talking about how the Rangers are playing for shootouts. We generate no sustained pressure. We secede the offensive zone without any pressure whatsoever, we take ZERO risks, our defense no longer is getting involved in the rush. Right now our team is a 2-1 team. Like it or not with Renney behind the bench that is how it will be. If we play the flawless hockey, we stand a chance at winning 2-1.

We will NEVER blow out another team. We will NEVER have a laugher of a game. We will ALWAYS be playing like its the 7th game of the Stanley Cup, and eeking out 1 goal wins, or adding an empty netter for 2 goal wins.

THAT is my biggest problem here. If you think any team can play absolute flawless hockey like this, every single game, youre dreaming. In the end youre going to have a team wore down by playing this type of hockey by the end of the season, and a team which will simply never be able to overcome any sort of flaws by their goaltender. If Henrik gives up more than 1 goal on any given night, we have less than a 50% chance of winning. If he gives up more than 2 goals, we have probably a less than 20% chance of winning. And if he gives up more than 3, my guess is our % is closer to 1%.

The Penguins play a 1-2-2, and did so well because they have the individual offensive players who can generate offense all by their lonesome to do so. We clearly do not without Jaromir Jagr. As such we need to adjust the way we play, not to batten down the hatches even more so. Renneys solution is to be even more defensive. To back further into our zone, to take even fewer risks in the offensive end.

In the end, youll see exactly what weve seen the past 2 days.

we can beat the mediocre teams in tough, hard fought, close games. We can not beat the better teams unless we play an absolutely flawless game and Henrik steals a win for us. He did not, and we got blown out.

  • I think we have to all acknowledge that there is a difference between being able to score goals, and being able to score goals all by yourself.

Nigel Dawes has proven on every single level that he is a 30 goal scorer, but he isnt good enough to do it on an individual level. Dubinsky has proven he can score goals on every level, but again, not good enough to do so all by himself. Callahan was a 30 goal scorer in Hartford, here, a lot less.

It all comes back to the system. You have an actual system for getting these guys scoring chances, and theyll score. These arent bumbling bufoons (besides Voros) out there, these are Professional hockey players. We dont have many guys capable of doing individual efforts out there, but we do have guys who can put the puck in the net.

If you have a system in place that takes advantage of their individual talents…IE, Speed and the ability to intercept passes and create things off of turnovers, we’d be all singing a different story now wouldnt we.

The long and the short of it is, with Tom Renney behind the bench, we know for a fact we wont score goals. Regardless of the personnel we have, we arent scoring more than 2-3 goals a night MAX.

We had Drury, Gomez, Shanahan, Jagr, Nylander, Straka, etc and we have NEVER been an offensive team. In fact, I recall that while doing the actual numbers a while back, weve never been “above the fold” with Renney as head coach (ranked better than 15th in the NHL in offense).

You can give Renney all the talent in the world, but playing his system, you will always have trouble scoring goals. Its a fact of life.

  • New Jersey Rangers - Hurricanes@Rangers Post Game Thoughts…

    Posted by inferno272 on January 28th, 2009

Snoozefest, Borrrrrrrrrrrring, ZZZZZZZ, etc are all other good titles for tonights game. Really what we saw tonight was what all of us bitched about to New Jersey Devils fans while they won their championships. That kind of hockey is BORING. Sure, it gets the job done when your goalie is great, but it’s not enjoyable to watch. After all, what is hockey, it is a form of entertainment. Honestly, how many of you were entertained by tonights game? I mean, sure, we won the game, and didn’t give up many scoring chances, and scored just enough to win. But did you enjoy yourself? Those of you who were at the game, did you leave the Garden thinking to yourself, man, what a fun game!

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, but I found myself borderline napping during that 2nd period. We played the neutral zone, 1-4 defense to near perfection tonight. No high quality scoring chances, no risky plays, everyone back in the zone, only perimeter shots allowed, yada yada yada. But there weren’t many rushes outside of the first 5-10 minutes. There wasn’t much sustained pressure by either team. It was just play in the neutral zone for 80% of your shift, get into the offensive zone, take a perimeter shot, and change lines. Rinse and repeat.

Look, I love watching a team win games. I love watching my team play well. And tonight we did everything you could want. So maybe I am just complaining for complainings sake, but I can’t be the only person out there who feels a little dirty about being happy with a win that looked identical to the New Jersey Devils style of hockey in every single facet. Particularly with how much shit I give that team for their boring style of play.

We won, but is it too much to ask for a little bit of an offensive attack? Now if you’ll excuse me, I gotta have a shower, being happy with a NJ Devils style win just makes me feel disgusting.

    Here’s The Deal…

    Posted by inferno272 on January 24th, 2009

Ok, so for a few days now I’ve been saying I had an announcement of sorts to make. So here is the deal. As you know, the economy in this country is doing horrendous. I am a business owner with 3 separate businesses that I run, in addition to doing this in my free time. Sadly as the economy maintains its downward spiral my businesses are getting crushed as many others are. I still make enough to make ends meet, but the superfluous stuff I used to do has had to go by the wayside. Like most of you I am tightening the belt buckles, making sure I can weather this storm. Anyway, I have run this site for 3 years now, as a not for profit site, and that is how I absolutely want to continue to run it. Unlike other sites that use free software and free domains and free hosting, my site requires me to pay for these things because if I used the free alternatives, then you guys would be subjected to advertisements, slow load times, etc. So for 3 years now I have been shelling out the cash for this place, quite happily. The traffic on this site is pretty impressive, over 2.5 million hits last year, and I continue to be ridiculed by other site owners for not using this traffic to make a buck. I have never done this to make money, or for any other purpose than to have some fun.

Unfortunately the way the economy is going I don’t know if I will be able to afford shelling out the cash it takes to pay for the hosting, domains, NHL Center Ice, etc that I use for another years service. Luckily I have several more months which have already been paid for last year to work with. So, with all that said, here is my goal. I want to be able to keep this site going, and when the economy rebounds, I can afford to do it once again on my own. But for the time being, I may need your help. As such, in the next few days, I will be adding a “Donate” button on the right side of this page, with a link to this topic. If you think you can afford a few bucks to help keep this site going, awesome. If you are like me, and are struggling, no worries, I totally understand, and I’m right there with you. Hopefully I’ll get enough to maybe pay for some of the hosting fees for next year, if so then I can pay the difference. But I figured I owed it to you guys to let you know, that it is possible, if I don’t get enough, and my businesses continue to do poorly in this failing economy, that I may have to shut this site down. But hey, let’s cross that bridge when we get there. This will be the one, and only request you will ever hear from me. You will not see me cry for donations every other topic, or add any sort of intrusive and annoying ads. There will just be 1 small donate button on the right which will be added in 3-5 days.

    Hopefully you guys understand.

    Bailout - Ducks@Rangers Post Game Thoughts…

    Posted by inferno272 on January 21st, 2009

I tried to think of some sort of Blair Betts take on the word Bailout, but Blairout just didn’t look right, so whatever, you probably get what I am getting at with that title. In a move practically every reporter, blogger, and messageboarder was absolutely irate about, Tom Renney decided to sit 2 of the most productive Rangers over the past 10 games in favor of 2 guys who haven’t proven they are AHL caliber players yet this season. Aaron Voros and Dan Fritsche got in a game over 2 guys who most certainly deserve their ice time, and out and out embarrassed themselves. Dan Fritsche was absolutely invisible, playing a 4th line type game tonight, not generating any offense and looked nowhere near NHL game shape out there. And he was the better of the 2.

Aaron Voros really humiliated himself out there. The lifelong Ranger fan who probably is a really good guy outside of the rink, and was actually one of the few Rangers to high five the Ranger fans in Atlanta, stood out as a real goat in possibly his final game as a Ranger. Voros took not one, not two, but 3 absolutely inexcusable penalties, and I could be wrong here, but I think 2 if not 3 of them were in the offensive zone. Voros was actually rewarded for his horrific performance by getting power play shifts. On this I can actually kind of understand, because he has the size to screen the goalie and create chances for his linemates, but when a guy stands out so obviously as a cause for concern, you don’t reward him with more ice time. In the end Voros was benched, by Renney after his 3rd retarded penalty, and was summarily booed by the Ranger fans for his effort.

If not for Blair Betts though, it could have been much, much worse. Voros was in the box when the first Ducks goal was scored, but Betts showed some real heart out there on the other penalty kills to lead the Rangers PK to an outstanding performance against one of the best PP units in the NHL. Betts on one memorable shift broke his stick trying to block a shot, then pressured both point men, blocked another shot, and got the puck out of the zone, all without a stick. He also scored the final empty net goal, and his penalty killing partner Sjostrom, netted another shortie himself.

It was the specialty teams that really told the story tonight, and really is the story for most NHL teams. You score on the PP, you kill penalties, and you occasionally net a short handed goal yourself, and you’re going to win. You manage 2 short handed goals, and 2 power play goals in one game, and you’ll almost always win.

A good way to enter the all-star break for sure. I’ll have a small announcement in a day or 2. Nothing big, but it’s something that I unfortunately must do.

    Again - Rangers@Penguins Post Game Thoughts…

    Posted by inferno272 on January 18th, 2009

The Rangers simply did not show up today. Don’t blame this on the refs, we played 90% of this game in the neutral zone or in our zone. When we got shots off, they were perimeter shots with nobody in front. We were beaten to every loose puck, we had guys sneaking in behind our defenseman all night, the puck support was laughable. In short, they disgraced the Rangers sweater tonight. Words alone cannot express the anger I feel right now. So let me leave you with this:

    Adversity - Rangers@Blackhawks Post Game Thoughts…

    Posted by inferno272 on January 17th, 2009

I feel like driving to Chicago, and ripping the 1 point out of the Chicago Blackhawks record, and giving it to the refs tonight. It’s 5am right now, and I only got through watching this game about an hour ago, but I’m wondering if I’m even going to get any sleep as mad as I am now. The Rangers played an undisciplined game, for sure. But they probably deserved about half of their penalty calls…maybe. But 5 5on3’s? Are you frigging kidding me? Marc Staal gets a misconduct? I’ve never seen the kid open his mouth in a game, let alone do anything misconduct worthy. The Hawks spent almost half of an entire period on one long consecutive power play. It was just a sight to behold.

A few games ago the Rangers went almost 60 full minutes without getting a power play, and they only started to get calls when the game was no longer in doubt. This was simply incredible to watch. Just an abysmal display of reffing competence. In my Rec game tonight we had a ref call a misconduct for a player who shot a puck on goal 1/1000th of a second after the whistle blew…and I’d consider that a good call when compared to the steaming pile of crap we had to see tonight.

Luckily the Rangers showed me some real character by defying the odds. They stuck together, played AMAZING defensive hockey, gave their goalie a real chance out there by defending him like madmen on all those penalty kills, and they scored 3 great goals. Captain Clutch gets the first and last goals for us, sandwiching a real beauty of a play by Lauri Korpikoski. You see, it’s games like this that makes me feel justified in saying that I would much rather keep Chris Drury on this club than Scott, can’t shoot the puck worth a damn, Gomez. At least Drury can score you some goals, and he seems to make his goals really count. Gomez on the other hand doesn’t score anything other than rebound tap ins, or empty netters. Gomez relies on other players putting the puck in the back of the net to get his points. In short, Gomez needs to be the player we really focus on getting rid of, ASAP.

Real good effort by the good guys tonight. Should be very proud of the boys, they deserved 2 points. Especially playing something like 10 minutes down 1 to 2 men in 1 period, with only 3 defenseman to penalty kill (Redden, Kalinin and Mara). I’m very happy…and yet I still find myself fuming mad. What can you say…these are the Rangers, a study in nonsensical emotions.

    Apologies

    Posted by inferno272 on January 14th, 2009

Sorry about no writeup yesterday. Real life sorta came in the way. I’ll be back next game for sure.

I saw the game. It was a mediocre effort by the Rangers, but they played well enough to beat a horrendous Islanders team. There isn’t much else to say. Well, except for this. Everyone keeps expounding on how the Rangers are turning this around thanks to their defensive effort. I dont see that at all. It looks to me like they are turning it around by playing the puck in the oppositions side of the rink. The pucks may not be going in, but the amount of time they are playing there, and the chances they are getting are wearing the opposition down.

That’s all for now, gotta get back to work.
