Bittersweet - Rangers@Capitals Post Game Thoughts…

As you can see, I snuck away from my guests to watch this game, and even liveblogged for the first, and likely last time. Ive got to get going, but some quick thoughts. 0 for 6 on the powerplay, and 2 or 3 OMFG saves by Olaf Kolzig makes the game. Rangers played well enough to win, but they didn’t. It happens, sadly, Rangers can’t afford for it to happen this late in the season.

Now we sit and wait for a week to see how the games in hand plays out. My guess, we’re in 9th this time next week.

Live Blog - Rangers@Capitals In Game Thoughts

Going to be live blogging today. Posts at the top are older, at the bottom are newer..

  • A bogus call on Vally ends up in the back of the net. He froze the puck in his own crease, how is that ever a penalty?! I dont blame the team for giving up a goal to AO on the PP, especially not on a deflatingly bad call.
  • How did Callahan get a penalty there? 2 minutes for receiving punches to the face?! This is laughable.
  • Bobby Orr Tom Poti with a nice rish there, our defense is nonexistent out there, we look like crap so far.
  • I love Vally, but if the Rangers keep playing like this, my point that Its not Henrik, its the defense, will easily be proved. Vally shouldn’t have been playing in this game in the first place.
  • What a wrister by Avery. The defense there looked surprisingly like ours does at time.
  • Big hit by Hollweg there, Rangers look to have their legs back.
  • Staal matched up with Ovechkin…at 20 years old the kid is already being matched up against the best goal scorer in the game. My God this kid is something special.
  • Sean Avery for unsportsmanlike, hard to complain about those kinds of calls, we know what Sean is like with his yapper, and I’ll bet he gets under the skins of the refs as much as the opposition.
  • AO made Strudwick look like a pylon there….not that he needed to do much to accomplish that.
  • One thing I hate about this team, they never seem to shoot directly off the pass. They always need to settle the puck down, then shoot. That gives the goalie the extra second or 2 to make that save. If you do that, you’re usually hoping for a deflection or a screened goalie, if you shoot it off the pass, you get all those AND you might just get it in based on lateral movement of the puck on the pass.
  • Olaf Kolzig is probably one the most underrated goalies of all time. Just a steady, smart, strong goalie. Washington was really smart in keeping the guy.
  • Hollweg has to lift the puck there, it wasnt that great of a save by Olie.
  • When Prucha is slumped over in pain, you know its something really really painful, the kid is as tough as anyone in the NHL.
  • Thats a bad goal by Olie the Goalie, you need to make those kinds of saves. Smart play by Drury.
  • Holy mother of God, what a move by Semin…
  • Mara with a canon of a shot there, he needs to play on the PP more.
  • That might be the worst display of a power play that ive ever seen.
  • Backbreaker goal. You never want to give up a goal late in a period like that, it’s tough to bounce back.
  • Strong hit there by Cally, Valliquette almost gave up a softie, thought the puck was going behind the net, instead came out right in front.
  • Callahan, Dubinsky, and Dawes are out there, think the Rangers rebuild was moot? Just look at that line.
  • Now there was a huge save by Vally….how the hell did Kolzig stop that on the other end?!
  • Jesus, Kolzig with another miraculous save…the guy is standing on his head!
  • Terrible pass by Gomez, Olie the goalie just threw the puck into the stands, woops. He taketh away, does he giveth here as well?
  • I’ll say it again, the powerplay is killing us.
  • Horrendous giveaway by Strudwick, but really, are you surprised at that?
  • Aye caramba…Hollweg with a penalty, Rangers need to pray to pick up a point.
  • Whew, 1 point, I’ll take it. I’d love for 2 though, let’s hope for a big time kill in OT.
  • Hah, that didn’t take long.
