That is the question thats been going through my head.
First and foremost, let me say I ABHOR these 2 deals. The Rangers have paid 2 “good” to “great” 2nd line centers as if they were the 2 best centers in the game. However in the process they easily strengthened the team 10 fold. Making them more clutch, faster, and more versatile. I think this team, as it stands now, could win a cup.
However the dollars and years given are insane, ludicrous, and every other synonym in the book. The thing is, if you are content at having these 2 guys center your lines, you still have a way of maneuvering under the cap in the next few years.
Lets assume Shanny is re-upped. You then have a possible lineup that looks something like this:
Straka Gomez Jagr
Avery Drury Shanahan
Prucha Cullen Callahan
Hossa Betts Orr
The backline being the assumed combination of Malik, Rozsival, Tyutin, Girardi, Mara, Pock, and Staal.
Thats a very good team, but it still can improve the following year with 2 openings in Straka and Shanny who I know wont play beyond next year. So there are your possible openings for Cherepanov and Dubinsky, or whatever other 2 guys you feel are worthy. Also Orrs spot can be freed up fairly easy for a kid like Jessiman or Korpikoski.
So while this is an awful move, as things stand now, its not the end of the world……AS LONG AS WE WIN THE CUP.
