Wow. Buffalo is downright frightening when they have the puck. I might need to check for mini-heart attacks because some of those shake-n-bake moves scared the crap outta me. Seriously though, this is why they won the presidents trophy. They are that damn good. With that said, this is why I keep harping on how good Henrik is. Any other goalie in the league, its probably 2-0 or more after 1.

Still though, its not like the Rangers didnt get their chances, but Miller did make some tough stops. Give him credit, hes been pretty solid.

You can not, I repeat, can not, take 4 minor penalties in a period against such an explosive team and expect to win many games. The worst of it is, the reffing actually looked fairly solid.

Know Thy Enemy II

Posted by inferno272 on April 25th, 2007

As before, I am working with a blog (This time 2!) from the enemy Sabres to give you some insight on the enemy. The first blog I spoke with was Tom’s SabreRattling blog. Tom’s answers are broken down on 3 pages, which you can see here, here, and finally here. You will be able to read my responses here. I was also able to work with the Bleu, Blanc et Rouge blog. Theres a fellow there by the name of “The Ghost of Dale Hunter”. His answers are posted here:

What do you expect to be the four forward lines, and the 3 defensive pairs?

Pominville Briere Hecht
Stafford Drury Zubrus
Afinigenov Roy Vanek
Kotalik Connolly Mair
Good possibility Paul Gaustad could return late in the series

Tallinder Lydman (will be matched with Jagr every chance Lindy gets)
Campbell Spacek
Kalinin Numminen

What are the expected powerplay and penalty kill combinations, and how do you feel your team will matchup against the other team in these aspects?

Lindy has been shuffling the PP and PK combos quite a bit, especially in game 4 and 5 vs. the Islanders. I think we may see situations where he goes with standard line combinations for the PP and subs in Connolly on the point and Drury with the Briere line.

I expect the Sabres Power Play to be effective, but not great. The Rangers, in my estimation, have a huge advantage in the area of special teams. Jagr had seven of his 8 points against us on the PP this season and the Rangers looked dangerous every time this season against Buffalo. If the Sabres play out of control or take foolish penalties the Rangers could take over this seres on special teams. Add to that the fact that special teams situations slows down the rolling of lines and really takes away from Buffalo’s depth advantage.

How do you expect the goaltending matchup to shake out? How confident would you be if your main goalie went out and your backup had to take over?

I think Miller will be excellent. He got better as the Islander series went on and he seems to save his best games for the better teams. I think Jagr, Straka, Shanahan will bring out the best in him. Lundqvist is a goaltender who scares me. He is a great goaltender who, when hot, can win a series by himself. I believe he is a far superior goaltender to Rick DiPietro. Assuming that both are bringing their a-games it should be a wash.

This series, in my estimation, will basically come down to limiting odd man rushes and getting to the net. If the goalies see the puck in this series it will not go in. We may very well have a couple of long OT games in this round.

If either team loses their #1 goaltender they could be in serious trouble. I view Weekes as a better option than Conklin though.

What is the one aspect of the team that could single-handedly win the series?

For the Rangers it would be their Power Play which can be dominant.
For the Sabres it is their superior depth. The Sabres generally feast on other teams 3rd and 4th lines. I expect Afinigenov, Roy and Vanek to be difference makers every shift. Also, the Connolly line could have some significant success if they get the right matchups.

What could be the team’s Achilles heel this series?

For the Sabres I would worry about toughness especially around the net. I am concerned that our defense will have a tough time dealing with the Rangers big strong wingers. Ryan Smyth was terrific and guys like Jagr and Shanahan could really cause the Sabres problems down low.

Which player is going to step up unexpectedly to win a game or 2?

I really think this could be Derek Roy’s chance to shine. I really think that line will be the difference maker in this series.

The game is on the line. Who do you want to have the puck?

I want the puck on Chris Drury’s stick. The man scores huge, huge goals. Honorable mention goes to Jason Pominville who also seems to have that knack.

How do you feel about the coaching matchup?

It would appear on face value that Lindy Ruff would have a large advantage. I have already read a few places where people show no respect for Tom Renney. It is hard to argue with Lindy’s success. I’ll give him the advantage. I think it needs to be said that sometimes the best coaching is being able to get out of your player’s way. I think Renney has done that in New York.

What 1 or 2 players do you fear from the opponent most?

Shanahan and Lundqvist. The fear of Jagr is a given.

Do you expect this to be an overly physical, rough, or dirty series?

I expect it to be extremely physical. The intensity should be dynamic and the crowds should only feed it. Interestingly Sean Avery has already gotten the Sabres fans in a lather and he has never played against the Sabres yet with the Rangers. It is somewhat amusing, he appears to be in the fans heads, here is hoping he doesn’t get in the Sabres’ heads.

Without getting too detailed, give us your predictions for this series…

Sabres in 6. I expect a few long, long games but the Sabres depth will win out.

I regret I will not have enough time to put together a preview for this round, though I feel you can get enough information from my post here to gather how I feel this series will go.

Sweep Caroline - Thrashers@Rangers - G4 - Post Game Thoughts…

Posted by inferno272 on April 18th, 2007

Ok. So, I’ve been reading around on other sites, particularly those of the Senators, and Sabres, doing my usual hockey routine to get some material on what should have been yesterdays post game wrap. I read and I read, and I got angrier and angrier. Folks, the teams out there are giving us NO respect whatsover. Most people are saying the Rangers got the luckiest draw for an opponent with my home town Thrashers. They are saying that we will get destroyed by the 2 juggernauts, etc etc etc.

I say. Really?

So, rather than focus on the sweep we just accomplished, I would prefer to take a look at the team we just faced, the Atlanta Thrashers.

For all those trash talkers out there, lets see how the Thrashers did against all 7 Eastern Conference playoff teams.:

So, while it may be easier to call the Thrashers a crappy team, the numbers, well, they just dont back it up. Heres the truth of the matter folks. The Thrashers are a VERY good team. A team that could, and has, beaten every team in the league, and does not have a losing record against ANY of the playoff teams. So all I can say is, the Rangers earned their win against a damn good team, and its just idiocy to say otherwise.

Personally, I think the reason the Thrashers had a less than stellar showing has more to do with some questionable coaching moves, and some flat out GREAT defense by the Rangers. Their stars had no room to play, no room to create, and most of their lanes closed off. Give us our due, were owed it.

Anyway, to finish things off, a friend of mine, Angie, was kind enough to let me share this short clip from the end of yesterdays game. MSG cuts too much of the crowd audio out, trust me, the place was ROCKING.

-Inferno

Yes, we just got a “make up call” at the end of the second. But you know what? The refs owe us at least 2 more penalties, and at least a dozen more from previous games. Say what you want about that call, the Thrashers have been given gifts all over the ice, and arent called for a damn thing.

That Avery play really pisses me off. The Thrashers tackle Avery with 3 men. No call, the Thrashers rush back the other way and score. The fans are right. “These refs suck”.

I like the resiliency I am seeing in this team, but its hard when you gotta face a hungry team, AND have to deal with refs trying to steal a game away from you.

-Inferno

That, was what I expected yesterday. In fact, that is also what I expected today. The Thrashers came out with a lot more life, and a LOT more speed. They looked hungry, desperate, and composed. It’s exactly how I would expect them to play. With that said the longer this game goes tied, the more it benefits the younger Rangers. Atlanta came off of a game where they played nearly 60 minutes in their own zone yesterday. That takes a big time toll on your body. Things like that may be key as we come down the stretch.

Both goalies are playing great, making key saves, and giving up 2 unstoppable goals.

I want a win, I want a refund for game 5. Make it happen boys!

Pre-Game Inspiration

Posted by inferno272 on April 18th, 2007

Some rated R language here.

An utter and complete dismantling. That is what we witnessed today. There are just so many things to talk about right now. First and foremost though it has to be about the goaltending. Once again (broken record much?) Henrik Lundqvist was the best player on the ice. He made saves when the game still could have turned around on them, and stood tall for his team. Hes the reason we won…as much as any other at least.

Then you have the crowd. I know you guys were rockin, I could hear it from the TV. And you can bet your ass it had an impact on that first goal and on the remainder of the game. The crowd is truly a 7th man for the Rangers, and you guys did the job.

Then there is the coaching. One coach was phenomenal in preparing his team for the enemy, in showing them how to neutralize certain players (*cough* Hossa *cough* Kovalchuk), how to take hits to move the puck, how to stay disciplined, and who used his home ice changes to secure the winning goal 32 second into the game. The other coach has just been putrid. In my opinion he is the single biggest reason the Thrashers are on the verge of a sweep. His attitude of winning the physical battles at the expense of puck support is just killing the team. And his mind boggeling handling of the goaltending just is beyond me. I would have played Lehtonen in the 2nd and 3rd games. I would have shown him confidence and let him get back on track IN HIS OWN BUILDING, with his OWN FANS behind him. Instead he pulls him for Hedberg. Granted Hedberg was just great, but that now means you stay with Hedberg till you get back to Atlanta. You do not let a young kid come off of a benching in the environment that MSG was going to be. Its just insane and idiotic troll logic. And yet, he does just that, and the kid gets shelled. Now what do you do? Do you play Lehtonen tomorrow? I would have to think not, especially since the garden is going to let the kid have it even more. How about Hedberg? Its doubtful he will even be in the NHL more than a few years from now. Kari is the future, do you kick your future goaltender to the curb with such valuable learning experiences to be had? I’m glad I am not in Hartleys position.

There are so many more things you can talk about, but I’m just going to skip it, and leave you with this:

Humble Pie - Thrashers@Rangers - G3 - Second Period Thoughts…

Posted by inferno272 on April 17th, 2007

I wanted to use “It’s the goaltending stupid!” as my title, but man, its way too long as it is.

Assuming you saw the second period, you should know that the 2-0 score in favor of the Rangers could have just as easily been 5-4 in favor of the Thrashers. Henrik was solid folks, and quite a few times he had to be. He made some truly amazing saves to preserve a lead that could have evaporated rather quickly. But once again, in the playoffs its about defense, and goaltending. A fact that appears lost on coach Hartley.

The funny thing is, as bad as Lehtonen has been in this game….and he has been brutal. The Rangers could EASILY be in double digits right now. They are making the Thrashers look like a terrible team, and its clearly boiling over in some frustration based penalties that the Thrashers are taking.

Lets hope we get out of the 3rd uninjured, and still full of energy for tomorrow night.
