Overcoming The Fix - Sabres@Rangers - G3 - Post Game Thoughts…

Posted by inferno272 on April 29th, 2007

What does the phrase “overcoming the fix” mean? That’s probably what I would ask had I visited this site to read some post game thoughts. Well, it all points to the conspiracy theory rapidly gaining strength that the league, or Bettman, or someone up there is trying to make the Sabres the cup champs as a way to showcase the “new nhl” style being exciting, and a style that can win. This is summarized very well here.

The question I have to ask myself is, do I believe there is a fix? I mean, I saw the Sabres get some pretty 1-sided reffing, and some pretty 1-sided help from Toronto in their series against the Islanders. Still, I didnt think anything of it. I saw the Sabres get an inexplicable goal in game 1, eerily similar, yet worlds different than what happened today, after which I said:

It is my contention that the refs MADE THE RIGHT CALL. the refs called it no-goal. the video review crew blew it. not because they want buffalo to win, but because they are idiots.
Link

Now, after seeing deja vu all over again, one really has to ask yourself. Is the league just that incompetent? Seriously though, the official explanation the Rangers got was this:

“The puck didn’t deflect off Rachunek’s skate and in. The pass from Hossa hit Rachunek in the skate … then … Rachunek propels the puck in with his skate,” NHL video director Damian Echevarrieta explained. “You can’t score a goal with your skate unless it hits you in the skate and goes in based on the momentum of the shot or pass. You can’t propel the puck in with your skate.”

All I can say to that is, show me where it says that in the rulebook. I have read, and re-read the parts that are relevant here, and the only rule governing a play off of the skate is as follows:

Did you see a pendulum motion? I sure didnt!

So either the rulebook is conveniently missing this information, or the head hanchos are making up rules as they see fit. This is a gross abuse of power in my personal opinion.

So, is there some sort of vast conspiracy to help the Sabres win the cup? Probably not, but the fact that I am no longer saying “definitely not” should be of concern. Because any other impartial NHL fan, probably is thinking the same thing.

Close Call - Sabres@Rangers - G3 - First Overtime Thoughts…

Posted by inferno272 on April 29th, 2007

Wow, that one JUUUSSTTT missed. I cant believe Henrik didnt have that one. Seriously though, the Rangers are forcing and forcing and forcing and the puck just wont sit still. Usually the crappy ice would favor us, the slower team, but right now its hurting us because weve had most of the chances.

The longer this goes, the more likely is it Buffalo wins. They spread their ice time around much better than we do.

-Inferno

Yeah, ok, theres no hanky panky going on here. Lets see. Rangers got 2 power plays in the first period. Since then? 0. Zip. Zilch. Nada. How about Buffalo? They got 5 power play chances since then. 5!!! 5-0!!!

They scored 1 legit goal, we scored 1 legit goal. except theirs counted, ours didnt.

NHL…I am disgusted right now.

-Inferno

Jagr said something like that before game 2. Something to the effect of, well, why dont we just give them the cup if they are so damn good. Well, after watching that second period, I am wondering if the NHL is doing just that.

I will talk more about this during the post game thread regardless of who wins, but right now, the NHL’s video review board are a disgrace. And I dont mean that in the meer commonplace use of the word, i literally mean, they are a disgrace to the game.

Right now, I am at a loss for words, trust me, that won’t be the case at the end of this game, i think the fury in my head is blocking my thought center or something like that.

-Inferno

I may not be at the game, but the fans there, and I are certainly together in spirit. We both agree, these refs SUCK! Sure, we may have got 1 more power play (yet to be completed) than them, but it should have been WAY more than that. There were at least 2 calls on Avery that went uncalled. One of those powerplays should have been a penalty shot. And Prucha took one hell of a slash when the announcers were commenting on how he was shaking his hand. Not to mention a Buffalo player closing his hand on the puck, and pulling it in under his body to stop the Rangers play. Just terrible, terrible reffing.

Rangers, in my opinion, dominated that period, but gave up a few too many quality chances against. Henriks been solid, but the Rangers have been better.

By the way, tell me you didn’t see 1 turnover by Malik with a pass up the middle like before, and another near turnover by Malik with a pass up the middle like before. You can’t be serious Marek, do you WANT the crowd to bum rush you at the end of the game?!

Thanks Malik! - Rangers@Sabres - G2 - Post Game Thoughts…

Im starving, so this one will be relatively short.

We deserved the win, they didnt. Id say we outplayed them for nearly 75% of this game and should have at least had this one go to overtime. The 3rd goal, theres nothing you can do about it, perfect, (And might i add, beautiful) pass by Stafford, and Vanek buries that every time. Sure, it was a poor matchup for the Rangers, but thats what happens when you have such a deep team against any other in the NHL.

So why did we lose? 2 words. Marek Malik.

Malik actually wasnt horrible that 1 play non-withstanding. He made a few nice poke checks, and had some decent positioning, and pinched, and didnt pinch pretty well.

However that 1, horrible horrible horrible play just killed this team. As Bauer from the ECSF message board said:

When I saw that play by Malik and the goal, I knew we would lose. It deflated me as a fan and I am as rah rah as you will get. Professionals or not, that kills them.

I have played on teams when someone makes a mistake of that proportion and it just kills your mentality as a team. Especially when you are going against a Buffalo with a hot Miller as you state

That pretty much summarizes my opinion of the play.

Yes, Ryan Miller was outstanding, far better than I gave him credit for. However, to me, the play that lost us the game was the giveaway. Once I saw that, I knew we would lose. If the goal had been like the Buffalo 3rd goal, I would have said were still gonna win. Because thats just a great play, you tip your cap, and move on. However when you shoot yourself in the foot (or head in this case) like that, youre going to suffer for it.

Next year, if we can replace Malik with this guy:

Marc Staal

And Rachunek with this guy:

Michael Sauer

We should be even harder to play against.

By the way, Isbister looked great out there, id just replace Hollweg with Ortmeyer and Ill be happy.

See you Sunday. No more predictions for me.

Containable - Rangers@Sabres - G2 - Second Period Thoughts…

Posted by inferno272 on April 27th, 2007

Ok, so that was why I felt so confident that the Rangers could, and will be the Sabres. Did you see it? One word folks, CONTAINMENT. This is what I saw in the Sabres game that did not impress me, you can contain them, they try the same plays all the damn time. This 3-man give and go, the “pass-arounds”, and a number of set plays that dictate their pace to the game. As Sean Avery was saying, this can be contained with a man high. If you send 2 guys deep, and keep a 3rd up high, you can neutralize those plays, and still play an out-in offensive game. Now don’t get me wrong, even though I have the utmost confidence in this team (now), I still feel that this thing could go south if another c-word comes to play. That is complacency. Buffalo is phenomenal when you sit back and let them attack, the key is getting the puck down low with the 2-man forecheck, and attack them with point shots with the men up high.

It’s doable. You are seeing why.

Night ‘N Day - Rangers@Sabres - G2 - First Period Thoughts…

Posted by inferno272 on April 27th, 2007

Even though the Rangers are getting their chances, and even held a short lead in this game, I am not talking about their performance. I am talking about the reffing difference between Game 1, and Game 2. This game is being called much much poorer in my personal opinion. They are “letting them play”, but by doing so are certainly letting some pretty blatant stuff go, on both sides. Though I feel this is favoring the Sabres a bit more, because they have gotten away with at least 3 ridiculously blatant hooks on Jaromir Jagr that have gone uncalled.

I dont care how you call these games, but a modicum of consistency is not too much to ask for is it?

-Inferno

For one second, just one second, close your eyes, and watch this game over again with your minds eye. Now, while watching this game, ignore the goals. Ignore the final score, and ignore the odd man play. What you should be seeing is 5 on 5, or 4 on 4 action.

Ok, now that you have done that, allow the even strength goals to creep into your mind. Lets ignore for a second the Pominville goal (trust me, we’re coming back to that shortly). You have the Sabres scoring 2 Even strength goals, and the Rangers scoring 1 even strength goal. That is a very very close even strength game. In fact, all you can say is, had the Rangers not lost their composure for that 4 minute span (both even strength goals scored during that span) they may have actually won this aspect. Lets add, composure, and attention to detail as a key thing for next game.

Next, lets look at the Odd-man game. The final score here is 1-1. However the Rangers were on the power-play for 6:31, to the Sabres 11:07. Now, let me clarify one thing really quick before you say anything. I feel, without a shadow of a doubt, the on-ice reffing was not only fairly called, but absolutely SUPERB. The Rangers deserved (in my not so humble opinion) every call they got against them, and for them. They were undisciplined, and took “lazy” penalties. I credit that to rust, and expect them to be better next game. So, what I take away from the odd-man inner look at the game, is that had the Rangers been a bit smarter, and more disciplined, they might have a better shot. Ok, lets add that as a key to the next game.

Ok, so right now, the score in your minds eye should be Buffalo 3, Rangers 2. What was the final score again? Oh yes, Rangers 2, Sabres 5. Ok, well one of those was an empty netter, those are a result of trailing, and dont really show how close the game was. Now, lets talk about the meat and potatoes here. The Buffalo 4th goal.

That goal, was unequivocally, a terrible, terrible, TERRIBLE call by the video review crew. Yes, this is going to sound like an Islander whine, if you don’t want to hear it? That’s fine, you can probably find something really great to read on any of the links in my blogroll on the right hand side of your screen.

Are you still with me?

Great, ok, lets walk through the play in question step by step shall we?

Fact: The on-ice official called the play (correctly) a no-goal. It was pretty emphatic while watching live, the referee clearly waived his arms in a “no-goal” fashion rather than point to the net signaling goal.

Fact: According to the NHL Official Rulebook the play in question must be definitively a legal goal to overrule the on ice call.

Fact: The puck deflected in off of Pominvilles hand.

Fact: The hand of Pominville released from his stick, came out about a foot, very much like a “punching” motion, and during that “punch” the puck was deflected in the net.

Now, these are all facts that can be seen via some reading to verify them, or by watching replays of the play in question.

So, assuming these postulates are correct, and you don’t disagree with me, then the official reasoning for the goal being allowed should not only baffle you, as it has me, but should make you irate, as it has me. The reasoning given on the telecast was that there was not “intention” to bat the puck in.

Excuse me?!

Unless the guys in Toronto have a magical camera angle which can read the minds of the players in question, there is NO WAY you can call that play a goal. Absolutely NO WAY.

Now, I am sure some of you are saying, well, that just means you guys lose 4-2 instead of 5-2, what difference does that make? It makes ALL the difference in the world. First off all, we were trailing 3-1 at that point. When a team is trailing 3-1 they play a different game than 4-1. They can be deflated, and dead. In the end the final score should have been 3-2 Buffalo with an empty net goal, but thats not how it turned out. Anything could have happened at 3-1, coming back 4-1 though is a different story.

With all of that said, not only will I not back down from my prediction of Rangers in 6, I actually am re-affirmed to it. The Rangers play their best hockey when their backs are to the wall. When people count them out, when people say, see, they suck, they will get their butts kicked. And you can bet your ass thats what everyone is saying right now.

Let me leave you with something to think about. When Winston Churchill heard about the attack on Pearl Harbor, he broke out a bottle of champagne and said, “We’ve won the war.” His generals looked at him like he’d lost his mind. America’s pacific fleet was wiped out, France was overrun, and the Luftwaffe was bombing London. Churchill said America is like a giant boiler. Light a fire under it, and there’s no limit to the amount of heat it can generate. If you start a fire, Buffalo, you better be prepared to deal with the flames. You read it here first, after losing game 1, Rangers win the series in 6.

-Inferno

You can point to Henrik and say, hey, bad goals, but its just not true. Listen up folks, because this is the truth. If you can hit the top corners as an NHL shooter, you will score goals. The NHL is dominated by butterfly goalies, goalies that tend to go down a bit too quickly. Henrik didnt even do that, but the 2 goals that werent deflected, worth both picture perfect corner shots. Nobody is going to stop those.

This is why Buffalo really is “scary good”. They can score, and do so in bunches. Still, I am not upset. I expected something like this. First game, home team is pumped, Rangers are rusty. Its going to happen.
