Mounting Injuries - Rangers@Penguins Post Game Thoughts…

Posted by inferno272 on March 10th, 2007

Well, we got 1 point, and thats a good thing for sure, especially since we had the dreaded 2 goal lead going into the 3rd that you knew was going to evaporate. But what is more of a concern is the carbon copy of last year where guys are getting hurt at the wrong time. Lets go over the list on injuries in the very recent past shall we?

  • Brendan Shanahan (Leading Goal Scorer)
  • Martin Straka (2nd leading goal scorer, and is playing very hurt, the guy cant do anything with the puck except carry it unfortuantely)
  • Fedor Tyutin (best defenseman)
  • Marcel Hossa (at the time he went down, was our best player)
  • Jaromir Jagr (our best and most dangerous player hurt sometime in the 2nd against the pens)
  • Kevin Weekes (while maybe not the best goalie in the world, his absence basically forces Henrik to play more games than he should as i feel Renney has very little confidence in Valiquette)
  • Then of course we have all the other injuries that have caused the teams makeup to radically chance, Bozo, Kaspar, etc. I’m not making excuses, the Sabers continue to win despite some major injuries, but this team just doesnt have the depth (yet) that the Sabers do. While the point helps our playoff chances, the loss of your captain for ANY amount of time is pretty hard to overcome. Lets put it this way, how do you think the Penguins would play without Crosby (Jagr), Malkin (Shanahan), Staal (Hossa/Straka), and Whitney/Gonchar (Tyutin)? I dunno, but it does make you at least partially excuse the loss here today. On the plus side this opens up (assuming Jagr is down for any period of time) a roster spot from someone in Hartford.

It happens like clockwork it seems. Almost as soon as the Rangers get a 2 goal lead, they convince themselves they are better offensively than they truly are, and stop playing defense to focus more on offense. If not for 2 miraculous saves by Henrik the 2 goal lead would be yet another example of a 2 goal lead evaporating. Its terribly disappointed when a team simply cant play proper hockey when they have the lead. I just hope they come out strong in the 3rd. They can not afford to let these 2 points slip away. When you control your own destiny, you have to control your own destiny and WIN, especially games you have multiple goal leads heading into the final period.

    Reputation - Rangers@Penguins First Period Thoughts…

It’s an important thing to understand when trying to justify the 2 calls against Crosby there in the first. While both penalties were technically penalties, neither were solid calls when held up against some of the things both teams got away with in the penalty filled period. The first penalty called on Avery was a call going with Avery’s reputation. The guy is a known agitator, a diver, etc, and somehow he tripped Sidney Crosby when he was nowhere near Crosbys feet. I say that is a penalty because while it may have been called a trip unjustly a slash by Avery went undetected near microseconds before the phantom call. The second penalty drawn by Crosby was as soft as they come. Crosby gets the tiniest bit of interference, throws his head back, and he gets called. In some ways Sid the Kid is very much like Jagr. Hard to knock off the puck. So if Crosby gets forced down, away, or throws his head back, its a penalty right? Not necessarily. Sid has taken too much tutelage from one Mario Lemieux. I dont care for diving folks, and Crosbys been embellishing to the point of “in essence diving”.
